Archetypes of the Tarot - The Chariot
The princely Egyptian figure rides an opulent chariot shaded by the canopy of the universe represented by the stars. He holds the scepter of authority that signifies his will in effecting matters. This embodies the power of the spiritual urge to do good and the individual desire to wield power, all in one person. Here is a person in the position to use his/her power for good or ill who must balance the two sides of these sometimes warring aspects. As so often said "Total power corrupts totally"; but is that necessarily true? Here is a person who must at all time weigh the conflicting aspects of their position and self.
Often this card is said to indicate travel in luxury and that is often true but as an archetype it is about a person who is often torn between the conflicting aspects of their own nature. Will the white sphinx of mercy hold sway and determine either a forgiving nature or will the black sphinx of harsh justice exact precise judgment and demand total retribution? How often have we heard or been in conversations in which someone is facing that internal struggle of which way to turn? Forgiveness and justice often conflict within each of us.
In that each of us must at some time confront these issues this is a card of every person yet this is also the authority figure who must make choices for not only himself but potentially for others such as employees, constituents, family. When we are in the role of parent we frequently find we are cast in the job of judge and also having to carry out the sentence. Mercy or justice? What will be the ultimate consequence of our action?
All of this and the absolute need to appear to be in control, unemotional, confident, certain with power to act. Although the Charioteer may appear stern, even frightening, this is the card that suggests the dedicated concerned individual who is profoundly intent on weighing the possibilities and considering the consequences.
