Louie Cruz Beltran

Spazio's - April 22, 2002

If you've only heard or seen Louie perform on his solo CD or at the Galaxy Ball, then I must let you know that your enjoyment of Louie Cruz Beltran has been limited.  He and his "octet, plus one", as he calls the orchestra, have much more abilities than can be known at the two previously mentioned encounters.

Louie knows how to relate to a crowd, both with his humorous conversations, and his uplifting musical selection.  For instance, he says that his friend from New York is in the audience. He is celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary.  Then Louie mentions that the friend is here with his girlfriend!  He catches everyone off guard.

One of the first things that struck me about Louie's showmanship was that he is very proud to be surrounded by the other musicians.  The very first number, "Senorita Mia", featured solos for 3 of the musicians. This was very impressive.  One would think the idea would be to push yourself first, and highlight the people behind you later in the evening.  Not Louie.  He's introducing them in the first set and everyone received a solo, some even had two.  That's a generous man.

Even Spazio's website admits it doesn't have a dance floor, but it states that a small one can made by those who wish to.  That night, a dance floor was created by many and used with no problem.  People couldn't help but to get up to the beat of Louie's music.  It is contagious and requires a response of the senses to move rhythmically.  Naturally, since Louie plays upbeat jazz, the dances were similar to salsas, and such.  But like with any good music, as long as you can find the beat any style will do.

Louie was amazing to watch whenever he did his solo on his drums.  His expressions and enthusiasm is incredible.  He makes these faces that make you smile and maybe even laugh.  You can easily tell, this man is having a great time and loves what he is doing!

It was very obvious to everyone at Spazio's that being able to enjoy the music of Louie Cruz Beltran and His Orchestra, was a special treat.  Let it be known, if ever given the opportunity to hear this fine musician and his band, don't pass it up.  Not only will you not be disappointed, but you will want to experience his music again and again.
