Max at the Movies – League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LXG)
Although I have to agree with Kheris’ review as well as critics that totally shot this one down, I took in account that this is another fantasy such as X-Men, The Hulk, etc. and took it for the entertainment value. I went to see this movie on a Sunday afternoon around 3PM and there were quite a few people present to view the picture. Surprisingly no one left before it ended. I have seen it before, and I wouldn't blame them as I walked out on a movie that was torture to sit through.
LXG however was interesting as the story had a few twists. You think they are all in the fight for good from start to finish and that is not the case. There are some who are part of the evil plan that they are supposed to stop from happening. It's not easy to figure whom that person or persons are, as they are all not considered good people. The action scenes and fight scenes are pretty good through the movie.
The only reason for me to see this film is that I am a fan of Sean Connery since the days of 007 when it made him a star. Yes, I was there to see the first 007 film but I was quite young and barely remember where I saw it but know that I did.
The characters in LXG are new for me, or at least some are. I too never would have suspected Tom Sawyer as a secret service agent or that Mr. Hyde was such a big monster. That was quite a lot of CGI there and he looked more like the Hulk. It was good to see that some of these people did have a lot of good intentions and used their powers, so to speak, to good use.
It was hard to believe that a sub that big could maneuver through the canals of Venice, but again you have to remember this is more of a fantasy movie where anything is possible, no limits. That was quite a big sub. Not like the one in Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Now that was a sub you could believe was real. Big, but not enormous as in LXG. Altogether it was not a bad film and maybe there will be a sequel as the film left that open as a possibility.
